NBA Finals Dominate With Overtime Opener

The odds suggest it's a fait accompli that the Golden State Warriors will win the 2018 NBA Finals over the Cleveland Cavaliers, so maybe the better question is: Who will win the MVP? The Cavs shot 27% from behind the arc and 44.4% overall, while the Warriors shot 51% from the field despite Kevin Durant's offensive struggles. The other perspective is that Cleveland came closer to winning in Oakland than anyone imagined, and that may signal a competitive series. "So I don't know what J.R. was thinking", James said.

"How would I know that?"

After the idiotic play, Twitter went nuts, and comments came in from hoops fans and pro ballers alike. As I noted this week, "Saturday Night Live" recently made fun of The Other Cavaliers, joking about how they provide support to James - except for actual basketball contributions.

The Cavaliers' unraveling in the final seconds ended up wasting one of the best performances of James' career. Although it started out with the Warriors looking like they would go on one of their typical third-quarter takeovers, the Cavaliers were able to withstand the pressure thanks to the efforts of LeBron James.

Even with his explanation, Smith's last-gasp play doesn't make sense, and that makes it hard to believe him.

10 players who will have key roles in the NBA Finals
Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love remains in concussion protocol and his status for Game 1 of the NBA Finals is still unclear. The front office will have big decisions to make in the offseason as several of their key players will hit free agency.

When asked about the replay, where it appeared Smith said to LeBron, "I thought we were ahead", he denied it. "So what are we reviewing?" But the officials chose to review the play and change the call to a block, swinging the game in the Warriors' favor. "Both teams played extremely tough.

He already had four blocks so I wasn't about to be the fifth", he added.

"It has never been done, ever, in the history of the game". And then tonight in the finals on the biggest stage, when our team played well, played our (butt) off, man, it ain't right.

Playing on the road, the Cavaliers led 104-102 when, with around 40 seconds remaining, Warriors forward Kevin Durant was called for a charge on LeBron James as he attempted to drive to the basket. A review of a blocking foul or charge only can be initiated to determine whether a player is in the restricted area, but during that review, refs also can look at whether the defender was in legal guarding position and overturn the call based on that if they see fit.
