President Donald Trump's administration separated nearly 2,000 immigrant children from their parents at the border over the span of six weeks from mid-April through May.

Ferguson made the announcement outside a federal prison in the city of SeaTac in the state of Washington.

The policy, introduced in May by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, caused widespread outrage in the U.S. this week after pictures of children being separated from their parents and placed in detention were splashed across the media. And members on the fence over pending immigration legislation were also heading to the White House to meet with Trump.
