Immigration has always been among the most intractable issues in American politics, with Congress repeatedly failing to pass comprehensive reform.

Democrats and centrist Republicans from swing districts say the party could suffer because Mr Trump's anti-immigrant harangues could be alienating pivotal moderate voters.

The House rejected the GOP's second attempt at passing immigration reform Wednesday, clearing the way for a possible vote on a narrower proposal to codify the Trump administration's family separation policy next month.

The depth of GOP opposition was an embarrassing showing for Trump and a rebuff of House leaders, who'd postponed the vote twice and proposed changes in hopes of driving up the tally for a measure that seemed doomed from the start.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week that prohibits family separation but the order does not address the estimated 2,300 children who are now being held at DHS facilities.

Trump's support for the failed bill had wavered dramatically over the past several weeks - from the President appearing to criticize it on Fox News to personally pitching the legislation during an in-person meeting on Capitol Hill to his announcement just days later that Republicans should wait until after the midterms to address immigration.
