The driver who was carjacked suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said the violence began at around 17:00 local time on Sunday when police received reports of a possibly drunk driver going the wrong way down the road.

As the suspect tried to take a second auto a "bystander here in the parking lot shot the suspect", Wohl said.

When they then arrived to that scene, they received yet another call that someone was trying to carjack vehicles at Walmart. Chaos ensued as people ran from the store, and the gunman followed, with more shots fired outside. The man's spree ended at a Walmart, after a bystander intervened, police say.

Police officers on Sunday investigate the scene of a deadly shooting at a Walmart store in Tumwater, Washington.

At that point, she said, two armed civilians in the parking lot confronted the suspect, one of whom shot the man dead.

Tumwater Police said the suspect tried to carjack two cars in the Walmart parking lot at 5900 Littlerock Rd SW. Police later determined that it was actually a carjacking, Wohl said. After he failed in the attempt, the suspect, whose name has not been released, headed to a Walmart parking lot where he made another attempt to steal yet another vehicle. There are no other suspects in the carjacking incidents or reported shootings.
