The 28-year-old, seeded 19 in his first Grand Slam since Wimbledon last year after struggling with a wrist injury, saw off Simon 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

World number 38 Khachanov has now lost at the last-16 stage at Roland Garros twice in a row, while Zverev ended his wait for a maiden major last-eight appearance at the 12th attempt.

Dzumhur, seeded 26th, had a match point on Zverev's serve at 5-4 in the final set.

"I'm young. I might as well stay on court and entertain you guys", Zverev, 21, joked with the crowd. Elsewhere, Thiem bested Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 in their fourth-round duel.

Zverev started the final set in fine fashion as he consolidated an immediate break with a serviced hold and avoided facing any break points to secure a notable success.

Zverev, who won back-to-back titles in Munich and Madrid during the clay court season, becomes the youngest quarter-finalist at Roland Garros since Juan Martin del Potro in 2009.
