Zsa Zsa, an English bulldog, was named the victor of the World's Ugliest Dog contest in Petaluma, California, on Saturday, June 23. The dogs strutted their stuff for a panel of judges who selected the very finest specimen from the monstrous mutts.

The annual competition, which helps organizers publicize the many pets available for adoption, allows owners to flaunt the imperfections of their dogs.

Josie, a Chinese crested with some chihuahua mixed in, had already participated five times in the contest held annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds, taking home a respectable second- and third-place finishes in past years. The tongue dangled at least four inches under her jaw while Zsa Zsa rested, similar to the melting watch of Salvador Dali's painting "The Persistence of Memory". Her mother saw her lovely picture on pet finder and HAD TO HAVE HER! Palms are sweaty, eye movement is rapid, and the stakes are high as judges deliberate on which contestant takes home the crown of "World's Ugliest Dog".

The team was overwhelmed in midfield and looked clueless in attack in another error-ridden display that resulted in an early exit. Given his first start after fully recovering from a calf injury, Rodriguez lived up to expectations.

Last year's World's Ugliest Dog prize went to a 3-year-old, 125-pound (57-kilo) Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha. She picked up Zsa Zsa about four years ago as a rescue dog from Missouri puppy mill.

The contest is in its 30th year.
