In his interview with Reuters, the us president said a nuclear deal with North Korea would have to cover its missile program.

President Trump has spoken of the possibility of winning a Nobel Peace Prize for his negotiations with the North Koreans, and the delivery of the letter moves him closer to the summit and the talks. "We expect it to take place", she said.

The announcement follows a meeting with a senior North Korean who arrived at the White House to deliver a letter from the leader on Friday.

The US has stationed troops in South Korea since 1953 when a defence treaty was signed after the Korean War.

China does not welcome U.S. presence in its neighbourhood, with speculation that it had suggested to Mr Kim to ask for troop withdrawal at the negotiating table with the US.

He said the North Koreans asked about the lifting of sanctions, adding, "I look forward to the day I when I can take the sanctions off".

Progress was being made between the nations and a summit had been penciled in for June 12 in Singapore.

"The eyes and hope of the world are on these talks", Mr Mattis said.

Kim's letter, to be delivered by Kim Yong Chol, an infamous and sanctioned North Korean official, could have served as an inflection point in the decision-making process.

"We'll see what happens", Trump said on Thursday.

Trump recently cancelled the meeting in response to a strongly-worded statement from Pyongyang directed at his administration.

Trump said that, after Friday's talks, the parties are "totally over that and now we're going to deal and we're going to really start a process".

Trump later said he has not yet read the letter, instead focusing on his discussion with Kim Yong Chol.

"We'll be meeting on June 12 in Singapore", Trump told reporters, noting that the meeting at the White House today "went very well".

Since that short-lived crisis, diplomats from both countries have conducted an intense flurry of talks, culminating this week when Pompeo sat down in NY with Kim's envoy.

As a result, American officials planning the summit are trying to work around sanctions that prohibit the USA from picking up the bill, or may ask Singapore to pay for Kim's hospitality at the Fullerton, a neoclassical hotel along the Singapore River, two people with knowledge of the matter told The Washington Post on Friday.

The flurry of diplomacy has also seen a rapprochement on the Korean peninsula, with the two Koreas holding high-level talks on Friday at the border truce village of Panmunjom to discuss their ongoing efforts to improve ties.
