President Donald Trump's lawyer has repeatedly counselled him not to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions despite the president's ongoing anger at the attorney general's decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.

Gowdy said in the interview that Trump is not a target of the ongoing Russian Federation probe and told Fox, "President Trump himself in the Comey memos said if anyone connected with my campaign was working with Russian Federation, I want you to investigate it, and it sounds to me like that is exactly what the Federal Bureau of Investigation did".

Trump has criticized Sessions on multiple occasions over his 16-month administration. “There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!”.

Trump then added, "And I wish I did!"

Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times Wednesday that he hasn't discussed Sessions' recusal with the president, but he argued that requesting Sessions to take control of the Russian Federation investigation is within Mr. Trump's authority.

Trump directed White House counsel Don McGahn to lobby Sessions not to recuse himself, according to the Times report, and during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago apparently attempted to persuade Sessions to reverse his decision.

"It makes him, I think, appear weak and indecisive to be so critical of a cabinet secretary", Gonzales said.

"They're asking him to do something that no lawyer would ever do [by] not recusing themselves in that position", Scarborough said. "The folks who have not seen the information, I don't know what informs their perspective".

Trump said one of those surrogates who appeared with Clinton on the campaign trail was rapper Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. Trump supporters lined up outside the auditorium early Tuesday.

Gowdy and House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., received a secret briefing last week about the FBI's use of the confidential human source.

In July, Trump told the New York Times he would never have nominated him if he'd known that Sessions would not oversee the investigation.

Gowdy explained that he, "never heard the term "spy" used", in his investigation and did not see evidence of that. Sessions himself has sat for an interview with Mueller, and Trump's views of his attorney general's recusal are among the questions investigators have for Trump should he do the same.

Trump, meanwhile, noted Gowdy's comment that the president could have picked someone other than Jef Sessions to lead the Justice Department. Looking ahead to fall elections, he has reinforced to Trump that the best approach now "is to keep focused on good governance in the midterms".

"When individuals like that are in the orbit of a major political campaign in America, the FBI.should look at people like that", Rubio said.

The president now says he regrets hiring Jeff Sessions as US Attorney General.

Sessions also says the DOJ will consider investigations into Hillary Clinton and alleged ties between the Clinton Foundation and the sale of Uranium One.

"He didn't even tell the president he was going to do it", Napolitano added about Sessions' decision to recuse himself.
