Stoppage-time goals from Philippe Coutinho and Neymar gave Brazil a 2-0 win over Costa Rica after they had seen a late penalty award overturned by VAR.

Soon after the win, Brazil supporters took to social media to praise the performance of the team.

Neymar dropped to his knees in tears on the final whistle after the tournament's most successful side came through a real test of character against a Costa Rica side whose hopes of progression are now over. But, after an exemplary use of the video assistant referee (VAR) system, the referee decided that the contact did not merit Neymar's tumble and changed his mind. Tite fell to the floor as he sped onto the pitch following Coutinho's strike.

"It kind of pulled a muscle - it tore some fibres, I think", he said in a post-match press conference. He is a human being, he needs some time to resume his high standard.

Neymar added the second with practically the last kick of the match, volleying home Jesus's square ball following a quick counter-attack as Costa Rica pushed for an equalizer.

After a slighly ponderous first half, Brazil cranked up the pressure in the second as Gabriel Jesus´s header crashed against the crossbar and Coutinho was denied by the ever-present Gamboa on the line.

As the minutes ticked toward the end of regulation, Costa Rica, disciplined and organised in a five-man back line, held firm.

The result leaves the five-times world champions with four points from two games after they drew 1-1 with Switzerland in their opening match, and they provisionally rise above Serbia to top Group E.

Costa Rica conceded again right at the death.

Switzerland's equaliser was only the sixth goal Brazil conceded in 22 games under Tite, while Neymar struggled to perform at his best.

Brazil coach Tite warned his country not to heap too much responsibility on Neymar's slight shoulders after the forward was often involved in discussions with the referee, frequently gesticulating and falling down when tackled.
