Severe Storms Leave Thousands Without Power In Connecticut

Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Sullivan Counties, and 125 National Guard members were deployed to help remove toppled trees and debris, fix downed power lines, and assist with traffic control across the state, Fox News reported.

There were almost 50 reports of hail in states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and CT, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

In Boston and Worcester, flooded roads trapped several cars, according to National Weather Service reports. An 11-year-old NY girl was killed when a large tree toppled onto the vehicle she was in. With the exception of Norfolk County, where wind gusts reached 50 miles per hour, most areas of MA saw wind gusts max out below 40 miles per hour.

In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a state of emergency for parts of the state.

Thousands of utility workers were working feverishly to restore power.

Falling trees killed an 11-year-old girl and a woman in incidents in Newburgh, New York, police said. An official said it could take days to return the power.

Known as a meteotsunami, it resulted in fluctuating water levels for several hours Tuesday. Several lightning strikes led to structure fires in New Jersey and MA.

The National Weather Service says powerful thunderstorms created a small weather generated tsunami off the New Jersey coast. But there were no reports of damage from the abnormally high tides reported in areas from Perth Amboy in New Jersey to Delaware's Fenwick Island.

Airlines also cancelled and delayed flights in and out of the region. Concourses were packed with passengers waiting for service to resume.
