The Phoenix Suns were awarded the No. 1 pick in next month's National Basketball Association draft via the lottery held Wednesday (Philippine time) in Chicago.

It's the first time the Suns will have the chance to make the first overall selection.

The Suns, an NBA-worst 21-61 this season, had the highest odds at the No. 1 pick at 25 percent entering the drawing.

"It's a historic day for the franchise", Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said while clutching the No. 1 envelope that the Suns logo appeared from to win the first pick.

Despite much clamoring from the fanbase about winning too much down the end of the season (something we did not agree with), the Hawks actually moved up one spot and will select 3 overall on June 21 when the NBA Draft takes place.

It's part of a big week already for the Suns, who introduced Igor Kokoskov as their new coach Monday and now will have the chance to pick No. 1. "Now we just gotta sit and see who we want". Kokoskov coached global prospect and consensus top three pick, Luka Doncic, overseas and could try to reunite in the desert. "We're going to do our job and obviously, I'm glad that we played the last two years to develop guys and try to win games". In a twist, the Kings tied with the Chicago Bulls - which won a coin flip to pick sixth.

The Cavs, who traded away guard Kyrie Irving to the Celtics last summer, acquired a number of players and assets, one of which was the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 unprotected first round pick.

Ironically, that No. 10 selection, which comes via the Los Angeles Lakers, was originally acquired by the Sixers from Phoenix through a three-way trade in February 2015 that saw Philadelphia's Michael Carter Williams go to Milwaukee. 12 and 13 with the Detroit Pistons' pick (No. 12) falling outside the top four.

A year ago the Celtics ended up winning the top pick in the lottery through a previous trade with the Brooklyn Nets. The team with the worst record will receive no worse than the fifth pick; under the current system, the team with the worst record receives no worse than the fourth pick.
