North Dakota joins lawsuit against maker of OxyContin

The Tennessee Attorney General's office is leading a bipartisan, multi-state group in this lawsuit against various opioid manufacturers and distributors as well as participating as a non-party in settlement discussions of another lawsuit pending in Cleveland, Ohio. North Carolina is among six states filing lawsuits today against drug manufacturer Purdue Pharma, accusing the company of using deceptive marketing that helped fuel the opioid crisis.

Five other states also filed a similar suit against Purdue Tuesday. An estimated 2.4 million Americans are addicted to narcotics including prescription painkillers and heroin. "Purdue initiated the expansion of the opioid market that created the opioid crisis", Stenehjem said.

Teva, in a statement, emphasized the importance of safely using opioids, while AmerisourceBergen said it was committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to combat opioid abuse.

The drug manufacturer denied the lawsuits' allegations and said it is disappointed that after months of good faith negotiations working toward a meaningful resolution to help the state of Tennessee address the opioid crisis, the attorney general has unilaterally chose to pursue a costly and protracted litigation process. We believe Purdue's conduct has been unconscionable, and we intend to hold the company accountable. In addition, hundreds of US cities and counties have filed their own lawsuits against various opioid drugmakers.
